    No/Limited Display During Boot/Shutdown

    I have always had the annoyance of nothing on my screen during shutdown. No graphical illustration of the steps being taken, nor a tty view. Shutdown has always just led to a black screen and eventual power-off. It was annoying, but I could live with it.

    Now, since building and installing kernel 2.6.19, I no longer have a graphical boot sequence. I get a tty after a while and can see the steps being taken, but its very annoying.

    Anyone know where the problem is?

    If you have a ati card maybe that is your problem: http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=9954.0

    I also had a black screen during shutdown and just for the last few seconds I could see the splash image, sometimes it would even hang completely. The fix in the post described above fixed it.

      Thanks.

      I agree that its probably something to do with the graphics adaptor, but mine is an nvidia ...

      I might give that workaround a go though, just on the off chance.

      Workaround: add (uncomment) the line TerminateServer=true to section [X-:*-Core] in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc

        Yeah, thanks Padre.

        That gave me a terminal during shutdown which is progress.

        However my main concern remains the lack of the nice kubuntu logo and progress bar during boot ...

          Maybe this post could help?

            Re: No/Limited Display During Boot/Shutdown

            Appreciate the suggestion(s) but hasnt worked, not out of the box anyway ...

            I didnt have a usplash.conf, so I created one as follows:
            Code:
            # Usplash configuration file
            xres=640
            yres=480
            (I also tried 1280x1024 ... perhaps thats the thing to do, just keep plugging numbers in, but 640x480 sounds the most likely)

            Anyway, on shutdown this gave me what looked like a jumbled up TV Test-Card (somewhat promising), but on boot there was no difference. Still just a black sreen until that times out and it falls through to the console version of boot messages.
