kubuntu/windows dual boot- endless beeping in linux

I have a partitioned drive running kubuntu 6.06 lts one partition and winXP on the other. when I boot to linux shortly after it loads the modules it begins beeping endlessly and won't stop. the sound card is an nvidia nforce3 and the machine is a compaq presario r3000. can someone help me fix this problem please? I am a newbie and completely lost. thanks!

Ok, the PC speaker is beeping constantly, but is the system running otherwise or is it stuck in the boot process?

The system is otherwise running fine. CPU load spikes here and there but the physical memory is maxed out, and I don't know which process is doing it.

Anything informative from typing dmesg or in /var/log/syslog? If something's having trouble it might log an error to one of those.

If it is the PC speaker you could just remove support for the PC speaker as suggested in http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=272760 although it is probably not the most elegant solution.
