    kubuntu won't start

    Hi, Im new here.
I recently installed Kubuntu 6.06 LTS in my laptop.
Well it was running so good until i configured my graphics card trying to activate the 3d aceleration.
Im very noob to these things so every guide that I found I tried to follow it but without success.
But I managed to configure my graphics card so i continue the wizard until i configured it.
But know when I choose to start kubuntu from grub it boot but then a black screen appears and nothing happened.
Well after hours of searching I found that putting:
    sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
was to reconfigure my graphics card so I choose Versa( i dont remember well) like was explained in other web pages.
But the problem continues and I want to follow using Kubuntu because I want that XGL + compiz effects even if my card doesnt suppport it but I have found a lot of guys that have managed to install it right but I can't.

Well I hope u guys help me.
Then if I fixed this problem I will continue asking u guys about accelerate an ATI 200M.
Thanks guys, Kubuntu is even better than Windos Vista.

    Re: kubuntu won't start

ATI is very problematical in Linux. ATI plain doesn't like L/unix for one thing. Another problem is they have so many different drivers, and there is no rhyme or reason or logical progression in the cards each driver supports that I can see. This is a much different approach from Nvidia or Intell who offer monolithic drivers that support just about every product they've ever made.

Did you try the howto's on this page yet?
    http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page

Note that there is a page that is distribution specific. Make sure you don't follow the Red Hat guide instead or the Ubuntu or the Dapper guide for Edgy.

There are 2 methods to install the driver in Dapper. 1 is for older cards, I think the M200 is fairly new? If so you will want to follow method 2.

      Thanks dude.
The problem is that in the login screen instead of asking my a password it gives me a beautiful black screen with a clock as a pointer on the mouse.
Nothing happens, just a black screen.
I enter in the second option of the grub that is kubuntu in recovery console.
So here i can enter to my kubuntu by typing startx, is the only way I can enter.
I follow the guide and tried this command because i want to revert my system like was before installing the driver.
      I used this:
      sudo apt-get install --reinstall libgl1-mesa.

Eventhough the black screen still apearing and i can't start kubuntu.
The only way I can enter is via startx.
i think i nedd a command to erase the driver that I put of ATI to the normal state so then i can start again to install it.

Hope u guys help me to find that command.

        Re: kubuntu won't start

I'm likely not the person to listen to on this. I never found a graceful way to recover from a bad/wrong ATI driver. Found out the hard way trying to get compiz to work. Everytime you play around with the kernel, any update to X resulted in my having to wipe the whole thing and start over.

I got to be very good at setting up Ubuntu on my ATI machine! :-)

This sounds really insane - but I have the best fastest ATI set up yet - and it came out of the box - sort of.

I borked it yet again, and grabbed my CD and started the install. It looked a little different than I remembered? Oh well, I must be using the alternate CD I decided and forged on.

Once the install was finished everything looked *very* different, I had installed Breezy by mistake.

Just for the halibut I typed in glxinfo - and I had working 3D?!?! fglrxinfo - and I had the right card?!?!

The update icon was on, and told me I could upgrade to Dapper - so I did and everything still worked just Jim Dandy.

So I installed kde kde-core kde-common and dev from the package manager then updated to KDE 3.5.5 and put my fave apps in and deleted all the ugly Gnome stuff and had a rocking and rolling Kubuntu with working 3D.

        <shrug> FWIW.

I did a backup and locked my install down and haven't messed with it since. I burned that back up to DVD and make a new backup to my USB drive every week in case I bork something I can rebuild from bare metal.

I think I will have to start again.
          Thanks for the link.
I hope someone help me, if not I will have to start again.

          Thanks anyway.

            It's a PIA I know.

I got to the point I can set the whole shebag up in about an hour and a half. That's vid driver, samba the whole 9 yards. It's a lot easier for me to just set it up than to fix some problems. Sorry I couldn't help more.

            Can I offer a suggestion? 2 really.

1 If you have the room make yourself a separate home partition - this greatly reduces set up time because many of your settings are saved.
            http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome

2 Download the partimage cd from
            www.partimage.org

Once you are set up and running good back up. It's easy and fast. Also it's an easy restore.

When these little oppsi moments come along you can roll back to something that works rather than starting all over.

              Re: kubuntu won't start

The thing that I don't understand is why when I write startx I can use kubuntu normally even with Ati video card configure and when i start normally it gives me a black screen.

The only thing I can think of is did you change anything in your menu.lst file? For instance - is your boot menu hidden with recovery mode as the default or something?
