I currently have Dapper and I want to use the Edgy packages so I understand that means I have to re-install with the newest live CD. Will I lose all my settings and programs that I've compiled?

Re: Should I install edgy over dapper?
If you created a seperate ~/ home directory (didn't do a default partition scheme) then you won't loose your settings. Files that you have compiled will be gone unless you compiled them locally. And even if you did that, you would have to recompile them anyways due to newer libs with Edgy.
You could always try an upgrade as well, but be ware that it will break your system if you are using any binary drivers such as the NVidia or ATI blobs, or if you have used Automatix or Easy Ubuntu, or 3rd party repos for that matter.
You could always log in in single-user mode (escape at grub and select the safe boot or whatever it is called, it will stand out), and then backup your ~/ home directoryRichard Johnson (nixternal)
Core Developer :: MOTU :: MOTU Council :: Community Council
https://launchpad.net/~nixternal
http://www.nixternal.com

Okay, but what about settings like the K menu, color schemes, icon changes and programs I've installed with adept? Will it look like a fresh install or will it recognize that I have installed kubuntu previously and offer me some kind of update feature?

Re: Should I install edgy over dapper?
If you don't wipe out your ~/ home directory those will stay. They are all stored in ~/.kde/share/config and ~/.kde/share/apps/programname
When I install fresh, I always make sure I create a seperate ~/ home directory so I can always install fresh without worrying about loosing my saved files and settings.Richard Johnson (nixternal)
Core Developer :: MOTU :: MOTU Council :: Community Council
https://launchpad.net/~nixternal
http://www.nixternal.com

Re: Should I install edgy over dapper?
okay I backed up the ~/.kde/share/config but I couldn't find the ~/.kde/share/apps/programname. So I guess I'll just go ahead and boot up the Edgy install disc. Now when you say create a separate ~/ home directory, what exactly do you mean by that? What are the steps and what will I end up with?

Re: Should I install edgy over dapper?
Can I offer a gentle suggestion? If you're having Edgy woes you'll find a much larger base of knowledge in the Edgy forum. Most of the people who come here are folks that decided to stick with Dapper. For example I played with Edgy for a day, and decided there was no compelling reason to spend the time to resolve some of the bugs it had on this system. I use my computer for my business and I'm really into speed and stability.
Reading other folks comments here and there it seems that if Edgy loads right the first time on your rig you've got it, but if it doesn't you're in for a long haul.
One page you might try is here:

Good luck and have fun!
