live DVD 386 vs. alternate install disc...

I am about to do a reformat and reinstall of Dapper after a boot error that I cannot seem to fix.

I am wondering if the alternate install will allow me to select which kernel I wish to install (386, k7, 686)?

I have the DVD version which includes the alternate install. How do I access the additional options during the boot process?

Just a suggestion: If you're about to reinstall, 6.10 (Edgy) should be released tomorrow, perhaps it would be worthwhile to install that instead of Dapper?

Don't think so, at least it hasn't been an option on previous CDs. However, changing a kernel is a simple process if done correctly, feel free to ask if you need step-by-step instructions. (Note: on Edgy 'k7' and '686' kernels have been replaced by the 'generic' kernel)

Haven't used the DVD, but I assume there is a boot list from which you can choose whether to start the (Alternate) Installer or run as a Desktop (Live) CD/DVD.

So then this generic kernel works on all platforms? Is this a separate kernel from the default version that Edgy installs?

It works on all the newer x86 family processors (intel and athlon), I think 386 kernel is still installed by default for compatibility purposes.
