No printing in Kubuntu 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake

    Hi,

I installed Dapper awhile ago and it's fast becoming my distro of choice. One issue bugs me though and that's printing. I click on 'Printers' in System Settings but that's as far as I get. The Settings window simply hangs and I need to 'Terminate' it in order to close it. I've shopped around on the Internet for a solution but don't seem to be able to come up with one.

Does this ring a bell, anyone? Thanks in advance for your help.

    regards,
    erik

try downlowding kcontrol and adding the printer from there. Someties kcontrol works where system setting does not.

I tried Enlightenment once, it was pretty cool.

      Hi Charlie,

Thanks for your reply. I tried kcontrol but when I click on 'Printers', that window also hangs. Bizarre, don't know what to make of it.

        try
        in a konsole write
        sudo kcontrol

see if you can add your printer within the root control centre ...

          Hi,

Thanks for your help. When I do a 'sudo kcontrol' and go to 'Printers', that window also hangs. I do get another errormessage though: 'Connection to CUPS server failed. '. Seems like CUPS didn't install itself properly?

I am having the same problem with a computer I set up for a friend. The printer worked fine when I set it up. I purged cups and re-installed it and it says that it is running. I just can't connect to it in anyway. Tried the system settings, kcontrol and konqueror. Something got messed up in an update. I am contemplating turning the updater off. I wouldn't think updates would screw up something like a printer. Is there anyway to find out what packages where updated when and start rolling them back. I need to print! I don't want to start ranting, but why is printing still such a head-ache!!

Mmmm.. how would I go about 're-activating' CUPS? Doing a mere re-install is obviously not going to cut it. Been there, done that. Thanks for any help.

                Some tips:

To check if CUPS is runing try to point your browser to "http://localhost:631".

There is a nice dir /var/log/cups. There are a couple of files there, check error_log, you can find some tips about what is wrong there.

                Cups configuration is in /etc/cups.

                Javier.

                  Hi Javier,

When I do a 'http://localhost:631', I get a window that hangs. Eventually, my Firefox comes back with the message: "The connection has timed out - The server at localhost is taking too long to respond."

I then had a look at the many logfiles in /var/log/cups. In a recent one of them (access_log.1) I read the lines:
                  localhost - - [18/Oct/2006:09:35:48 +0200] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 351 CUPS-Get-Classes client-error-not-found
                  localhost - - [18/Oct/2006:09:36:28 +0200] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 351 CUPS-Get-Classes client-error-not-found
                  localhost - - [18/Oct/2006:13:17:15 +0200] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 351 CUPS-Get-Classes client-error-not-found
                  localhost - - [18/Oct/2006:21:27:16 +0200] "POST / HTTP/1.1" 200 351 CUPS-Get-Classes client-error-not-found

In error_log.1 I read the lines:
E [18/Oct/2006:08:35:12 +0200] Unable to bind socket for address 127.0.0.1:631 - Cannot assign requested address.
                  E [18/Oct/2006:12:51:41 +0200] Creating missing directory "/var/run/cups/certs"
                  E [18/Oct/2006:21:20:33 +0200] Creating missing directory "/var/run/cups/certs"

I Googled around a bit and found "Bug#374946: cupsys: 1.2.1-3 does not work: CUPS-Get-Classes client-error-not-found" but no solution there.

Does this ring any bells, Javier?

Re: No printing in Kubuntu 6.06 LTS Dapper Drake

The oldest entry are 5 days ago?.

Or are that the lastest errors?.

Are you sure that cups is runing?

You can check it with this command:
                      $ pa -A u | grep cupsd

The u is optional but will give more info .

It doesn't look like a kde problem to me, as you are not able to connect to the web interface, but who knows?.

You can also try the radical way. Uninstall cups, delete /etc/cups, reinstall.

Or you can check if dkpg-reconfigure cups will help.

Both methods will likely (sure the first) delete your printer info.

                      Javier.
