Well i have a dell 9400/e1705 and i installed kubuntu on a spare internal drive, to play with, and i just swap out the drives with my main drive for work. Well i got a external case for my spare hd with kubuntu on it. I can have the dell boot from the drive, but It fails to boot because all the drive letters and stuff have changed. Can not mount anything because the sda is no longer the first drive, since its now an external drive. Is there anything i can do/ how to reinstall to get it working with an external drive?

Re: help with external hd boot
Sorry for the delay in responding. I'm not sure that you can boot from an external drive. Normally, external drives need to be mounted before they can be read. You'll have to see if you can declare the external drive as the boot drive in your BIOS.

Re: help with external hd boot
Hi,
In fact, I've seen a guy using an external disk as primary os, it was with debian.
for kubuntu : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootFromUSB
for debian : http://feraga.com/node/30
Hope it helps.
