I need to figure out how to get to Kubuntu's Repair/Rescue Mode. The system files on my kubuntu install are messed up somewhere, because while the hard drive is passing the seagate test and the data on its safe when mounted from a live cd, it refuses to boot.

How far along the process does it get? Do you get any screen message at all? Normally, the way to enter recovery mode is to wait until you get the message that GRUB is loading, then hit ESC. This will display the GRUB menu. One of the menu options will be to boot into recovery mode.
