    Kubuntu wont boot.

At boot I get DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER. I know there is nothing wrong with the disk itself physically, because I can mount it and fdisk it from live cd. When I go from the live cd menu and press Boot from first hard disk, I get isolinux: Disk error 80, AX = 0201, drive 80 Boot failed: press a key to retry. and it continues. Please help.

Ive seen that once before on a bad iso.
check your CD/DVD for errors. I believe its Option number 3 or 4 on the disk.
Also you can check the md5sum of your CD/DVD.

Well, this was an established system and the install disk came from shipit. It happened when someone else fiddled with the hard drive in another machine I believe. Is there any way to repair it?

nevertheless check if it was a good burned copy.
Ive read of bad copies of shipit CDs. It just a question of reality,
from the thousands they ship, a few are bound to be bad.

also can you be more specific what was fiddled with?
(was it in your system or in another computer)?

This has always been my hd, but someone else tried using it for theirs while i was out of town and it doesnt work now. my computer recognizes the drive, and i can mount it from live cd and view files, but it wont boot. The CD is good.

Maybe check if your HD is recognised in the BIOS and setup as part of the bootup media?

If it is and its still not booting then:
Can you give a background on your machine.
What OS is installed on your disk? What filesystem do you use?
Whats your disk properties? Is it primary/secondary?
How many disk do you have? ...

If it is and its still not booting then:

Can you give a background on your machine. Background? Its a Compaq S5100NX thats been gently treated for most of its life. One event caused this.

What OS is installed on your disk? Kubuntu

What filesystem do you use? ext3
Whats your disk properties? Is it primary/secondary? primary
How many disk do you have? ... in it, 1. around here prolly a good few.
