cursor and window elements garbled

This started with 5.10, recently installed and updated to 6.06 due to some issues with my notebook and the live cd.

Cursor displays most of the time, disapears into a square when mousing over icons.

some of the KDE bars (at the top of the window, and within the main menu), are a little funky looking too. see atachment.

I'm running this on a sony vaio PCG-SR7K

Any clues as to what to look for, or do to fix this?

UPDATE:
I've gone back and installed 6.06 from scratch. The same issues are there.

OK, I found someone else with a similar problem.

This fixed my mouse problem, however some of the background elements are not displaying correctly. This I can live with, but the picture above is still how things look.

I had ran across this before, but I had put the option on the inputdevice and not the video card device.
