    Can't start X

i was upgrading to edgy with adept and i downloaded 360MBs worth of packages that took about 6 hours and when it was installing it got to a package having to do with cups and said it couldn't install it, so it stopped there.  no big whoop, i was just gonna figure out the cups prob and then install the remaining packages...BUT i decided to reboot and then i'm stuck with this problem again but a different cause:
    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...33951#msg33951

(can't start X or kde)  (using 6.06.1 cd to type this)

this is what i get when i boot in recovery mode and type startx and startkde:

    startx
xauth:  creating new authority file /home/disturbedite/.serverauth.4630
    giving up.
xinit:  connection refused (errorno 111):  unable to connect to X server
xinit:  No such process (errorno 3):  Server error.

    startkde
xsetroot:  unable to open display ' '
xset:  unable to open display " "
xset:  unable to open display " "
xsetroot:  unable to open display ' '
    startkde:  Starting up...
ksplash:  cannot connect to X server
kdeinit:  Aborting.  $DISPLAY is not set.
Warning:  connect() failed : :  No such file or directory
ksmserver:  cannot connect to X server
ERROR:  Couldn't attach to DCOP server!
    startkde:  Shutting down...
Warning:  connect() failed : :  No such file or directory
    Error:  Can't contact kdeinit!
    startkde:  Running shutdown scripts...
    startkde:  Done.

it seems as if my display isn't being recognized.  this is disappointing considering this is the second time this type of problem has occured with two fresh installations.  any help that can help me resolve this would be greatly appreciated.

btw, i already tried sudo pkg-reconfigure -a and sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg  but neither of those worked.

    Re: Can't start X

i found some more information.  i tried export DISPLAY=disturbedite.disturbed-desktop:0 and DISPLAY=disturbedite.disturbed-desktop:0:0 (not sure which of those should be right).
    i get:
xauth:  creating new authority file /root/.serverauth.****
    xinit:  Server error.

EDIT:  it seems as if i might have been bitten by the xserver-xorg-core bug. twice.  fool me once...yeah yeah.  i updated to 1.1.1 via apt-get but it still didn't work!  startx still gives same display problem. but now startkde gives a bunch of INET cannot connect to X problems....

I'm having the same problem. Tried sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg but it didn't help.
I also tried removing .ICEauthority and it didn't help either...

try in recovery mode (press the ESC at boot)
then enter your pass word at the prompt ...

            sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

            then restart the system ...

i figured out what my problem was. i was trying to change the video driver to i845 (which is the intel chipset i have) but apparently those ARE NOT the same thing. i just left it at the default i810 driver and all is fine.
