New user not showing up for login

I used "System Settings/User&Groups" to add a second user. It appeared that the user was added, a home was made. However, at login time, the new user is not shown by the login manager. If "switch user" is selected form the menu button on the login screen, "unused" is the only selection shown.
The new user appears in the passwd file with uid=1001 and primary gid=500. I wondered why the gid is 500. My account has uid and gid both set to 1000.
I viewed the login manager GUI and everything seems to be set correctly. I changed nothing.

You really won't see the new user in the login screen unless the KDM (Login screen) theme you are using supports that function or you disable the KDM theme altogether. All you have to do is to type in the new user's username and password. The login screen remembers the last user who logged in/out and puts that username in the field.
