    Kubuntu Desktop control Center

    Hi everyone.

I just installed Kubuntu 6.06 Live CD on my laptop, which has a broken and nearly useless LCD monitor (widescreen).

Since the whole install procedure could be performed with the secondary video output working, it was very easy to go through it connecting a second monitor.

My problem now, is that the other monitor I have is NOT a widescreen, so I have the sides of the cloned desktop "cut out".

I tried to solve the problem through the "control panel", but the Display configuration window (I'm sorry I don't remember the exact names now because I'm on another computer) did't allow me to enable a second monitor, even in Administrator Mode, and, frankly, it seems like the system didn't even recognize there was a second monitor connected (though from the "hardware scanning" tab if I asked to automatically identify the monitor it came out with the right manufacturer and model.

It seems like all changes I make are not made permanent. In facts if I open /etc/X.conf after I close the app, I still see the same one (I'm not skilled in manual X.conf configuration, so all I can see is that there is a single Layout, with a single Screen and Display, which seems obvious is NOT the right thing).

I'm stuck here. Can anybody give me some hint? Must I post the X.conf file I have? The Laptop is a HP Pavilion dv1000, if it's of any help.

On a side note, I'd also like to enable the S/Video out, to be able to use this poor crippled laptop as a media player. Can anybody help?

    Re: Kubuntu Desktop control Center

Have you tried using the live cd or even DSL or Knoppix. compare the video on those. Linux does not seem to be as flexible with the video settings as in Windows. If you were not allowed to change the display in the control panel then most likely you are stuck with that. It might be the limitations of the video card.
