    kubuntu killed windows

I previously had Suse 10.1 installed alongside Windows XP. I installed kubuntu 6.06 fine, but now I can't boot into XP. I select Windows XP Home Edition from the GRUB menu, and I get the initial Windows XP loading screen, but then i just get a black screen and nothing happens. I'm pretty sure I only overwrote Suse when I installed, and I can see the XP files from kubuntu. I need my XP to play games and use my iPod (I had previously bought ITMS songs), so any help would be greatly appreciated!

You can probably fix your windows logon, but I can't say with absolute certianty that it wont do anything wierd to grub.

Set your BIOS to boot from CD

Insert your XP install CD and reboot your computer

It been a while since I used XP, but when the install CD runs it will ask you if you want to install bla bla bla press F8 to enter recovery console, or something like that.

In recovery mode, type fixmbr, then fixboot. When they are done, reboot.

Again, I can not stress enough, I don't know what exactly this might do to grub. If you don't want to risk it, I'm sure somebody more knowledgeable than me might have a better way if your willing to wait.

This will overwrite Grub meaning you will need something like a Linux Live CD to boot into Kubuntu. However, I am not sure you have a Grub problem. If you say you see the initial XP screen (and by that I mean the one with Windows on it and the scrolling Green or blue bar) then Grub has done its job and windows is loading - then you have a windows problem if it doesn't proceed. I don't know what that might be - did you do any resizing partitions or anything like that?

        Thanks for the replies
-No I don't think it's a grub problem, as it goes to the Windows loading screen. It has to be a Windows problem, but I don't understand how it happened because when I installed kubuntu I made sure only to install it on the Suse partition (no resizing, nothing). And I can't do the fixmbr fix, because I don't have a Windows CD. I'm using the copy that came with my computer, and all I have are the recovery disks Compaq had me make. These will completely restore the computer and wipe Linux too. The fact that I can still see all the Windows files from Linux would indicate that Windows hasn't been changed, right?

You probably need a Windows forum now however, it shouldn't matter about too much about you not having a Windows CD. Its not something I have to use very often but this will contain the tools you need
