    Setting up users etc.

Hi folks, . Relative newcomer to LInux.

As a recent convert from another OS I have settled for Kubuntu (Applause!) via suse 10.1/Ubuntu etc.

Having managed to get my printer working (phew) I am now struggling to set up users/groups. (What a convoluted mess!)

Would anyone care to walk me through setting up myself as main/Admin user with my other half as plain user. So far everything I do only brings up the login screen with my username and waiting for my Password.

Hats of to pdr60 for the installation/setup guide, a very 'cool' peice of work Sir.

    Regards Helterskelter (aka eddie)

    Re: Setting up users etc.

I'm relatively new to Linux myself, so I hope this is helpful.

Admin-> the person who installed Kubuntu is automatically assigned the administrator mode (you would have been asked for a "root" (sudo root) password on install. So your account should be set.

Others-> K menu-> System Settings -> Users/Groups -> click the Administrator mode button at the bottom & give it your password when it asks -> Add new user -> enter the info for each user ->

By default they will have extremely limited accounts. Some basic priveleges that most users need is access to disks and audio/video. To give them these permissions, add them to certain groups. Essential "secondary" groups are a) users b) operators and c) audio/video. I would set them up w/ those and let them use their accounts for awhile. If their is anything they can't do w/ these settings, you can add what they need (via groups) later.

      Nice and prompt! Thanks Emerzen.

Once I find out where the "users and Groups module" has disappeared to!

      Happy days.

You may be looking in the wrong spot. Click on the "K" in the bottom left. There is a selection called "settings" w/ a black arrow next to it and a pullout menu opens when you hover the mouse over it. That's not it. Look lower through the list and you'll see "System Settings." Click on that and a box opens up somewhat like "the control center" in windows. At the bottom left is "users and groups." I'm doing this from memory as I'm at work, but I hope that's it. No problem, glad to have you around, and good luck.

Sorry, I didnt explain that very well.

I meant that the 'users and groups' program couldnt find the 'users and groups module' it needed to display its thing.
sorted now, but still dont have wifeys name on the login.
Is the log in SUPPOSED to display a list of registered users? or just the primary user?

by default, whoever is logged in last will be displayed. I'm sure this can be configured somewhere, look under sessions or session manager, I think that's where I saw it.

              Back again!

I still can't get an account to appear for my wife, despite having added her to the users list and given basic access permissions.
All that shows at the login screen is my login name pre inserted and waiting for my password.

              Any ideas??

You've probably tried this, but I'll mention it anyway. When you're at the login prompt w/ your logon name, did you try to delete your name and type in your wifes logon name? ...and password?
