Hey.
I've tried installing Kubuntu 6.06.1 but GRUB doesn't work and I'm unable to boot my newly installed OS.
I currently have three HDD's:
- 120 GB SATA: I have Windows XP installed on this one on a 90GB partition. I had OpenSuSE 10.1 installed on the other partition and GRUB seemed to work fin.
- 200GB and 40GB PATA: Files and data.
So, what I did was format the OpenSuSE partitions, load up the Kubuntu setup (via the Live DVD), formatted the Linux partitions again accordingly (made a 1GB swap partition and I left the rest for root) and everything finished OK. It didn't ask me if I wanted to install GRUB or LILO, but I assumed that was normal because I already had it installed from my previous SuSE installation.
I restarted, took the DVD out and got a GRUB 17 error. I'm kind of new to Linux, but I suppose it was looking for the SuSE installation and was unable to find it, so I fixed the MBR with my Windows XP CD (from the Repair Console), and decided to install Kubuntu again (this time from the text-based installation). It then asked me if I wanted to install GRUB, so I did, but after having finished the installation, restarting and taking out the DVD, it still booted to Windows automatically, as if it hadn't changed the MBR.
OK, so now I formatted the Linux partitions yet again and tried installing Kubuntu with the new GUI and without having GRUB installed (I hadn't tried that before, so I thought it would be worth a try), but it still booted Windows automatically. It didn't even ask me if I wanted to install LILO or GRUB...
I've found some websites that explain how to install GRUB "by yourself" (i.e. without the help of Kubuntu's installer) but I'm not really too confident about doing it because in the past I've already had to format my 120GB (screwed up partition tables) because of playing around to much with my MBR.
Any ides on how to solve this? Thanks.
EDIT:
Just in case, here are my computer specs:
Pentium IV @ 3,06Ghz (w/ HT)
2 PATA HDD's: 40GB and 200GB
1 SATA HDD: 120GB
nVidia GeForce 6600GT (128MB)
1024 MB RAM
I remember having this problem some time ago, and it turned out that it was installing GRUB on my 40GB secondary HDD. I've checked on both secondary HDD's, but can't find a boot folder like last time... So I suppose it's not the same problem.
