install problems - 2 indentical systems

    Each system has a
    DFI NFII U400SG - AGF
    512 Megs Ram Kingston
    MSI nvidia Geforce Fx 5200
Sata Drive Western Digital 200/160 Gig
    Pata CD Drives LG's
Chipset NVidia NForce 2 ultra 400GB
    BIOS 10/24/04
Sound (onboard, 5.1 sound blaster Live)

So the only thing different on the systems is the size of the HD and sound.

But the one with the 200gig(on board sound) boots into the Kubuntu cd (got it through the mail) and the other one hangs at Loading Drivers for a few minutes and then goes to a black screen.

We have tried 2 version of kubuntu 6.06 downloading and the special install disk too.

So what can be the problem.

The only thing that comes to mind is differing bios settings....

If all else fails swap the HDs over, install on one, swap back and install again.

As we said they have identical bios's that includes settings. As for taking apart the other system that is working, I'd rather not do that.

In that case [Same bios settings] just treat this as a hang on boot from the installer.

My first action would be to try and boot the cd without acpi/apm/ in the kernel, this has caused problems in the past for me when probing with sata drives.

Also (assuming someone can confirm kubuntu can handle this later on) swith off all un-needed hardware from the bios (ie boot with 1 sata contoller/channel, 1 pata controller/channel and a network interface), once installed turn it back on and let it get handled on reboot by the installation.

Moving back to the 'I have one machine working' scenario, don't take the working one apart, plug the other drive in and (after checking it's not faulty) copy the whole install over, run grub and install the bootloader from the working machine and swap the drive back, cloned install.

... > I figured out what the problem was. The kubuntu disk does not like my dual layer dvd burner. On a whim I put the disk in a standard dvd driver and it worked... Anyways thanks for your help.
