    Live/install cd...

    Hi!

A few weeks ago I buyed a pc-magazine, with a Linux-cd in it... You can find that magazine here:
    http://www.kubuntu.org/
    Hey, I know that link...
But okay, just scroll down and you find the magazine.

    The cd is a (I think you call it a...) desktop-cd. It's a mix of a live-cd and install-cd.
Looks great! Because you now have a graphic installer, and not a text-based one.

But... I need the text-based to do this.

I have an very old laptop. Just 64 mb sd ram !!! Brrrr.
But Linux Ubuntu (the old version, 5.10) works great on it! Now I want to upgrade to Kubuntu 6.06 , and that cd gives me the chance to do so.

The Live-cd needs 192 mb sd ram, that's too much for my old laptop... Is there any way that I can switch to a text-based installeren? There MOST be way, not?
I mean, the packages etc... are on that cd... Is there not a command that you can type when you boot from that cd?

"A few weeks ago" and just now I'm asking for help? Yeah I know, a bit late.
But my head was full of ndiswrapper and wireless...

Unfortunately, you can't use the Desktop CD as a repository. You really have to download the Alternate Install CD (text-based installer).

The main reason is that, even though the Desktop CD does contain the programs for a basic installation, you need the actual .deb files in order to upgrade from an existing installation. The Desktop CD does not contain this, as it would double the space that is used.

Sorry, I forgot to tell this: I made back-ups of my Ubuntu... So it isn't a problem if I need to reïnstall everything. (formatting)

The alternate install-cd... Does it need an internet-connection to install?

      Thanks for the quick reply.

Well, you could just reinstall from scratch. But since you have low RAM, installing using the Desktop CD might not be an option (I'm not sure if it has a text-based install option).

You don't need an internet connection with the Alternate Install CD. With the Alternate Install CD, you can either install from scratch, or upgrade an existing installation using the CD as a repository.
