blank screen on boot on laptop

6.06 kubuntu install on Acer 3004 WLCi laptop. Dual booting with XP.

Everything works fine, really. But after the GRUB screen and selection the screen goes blank for about a min, then shows some text but only on about 1/5th of the screen along the left hand side. Seems like it's trying to squeeze something that should be a whole screen width into about 15 characters wide.

After it gets to X it's fine and I can login and X/KDE work fine. Just that kind of blank what's going on here 2-3 mins durring boot. I assume it's probably a resolution that my laptop cannot display, but I don't know exactly what to change to get it to use something that my laptop can display. Any ideas?

Wow, someone with a lower Linux User number than mine!

You probably need to change your default boot options in /boot/grub/menu.lst. The "vga=" options are just like Knoppix cheat codes.

Ah yes, added vga=normal and see it properly. Sorry, first time with linux on a laptop/lcd.

I registered that number back in.... hmmm... I'm thinking 98. Was just getting started with Slackware and the first email was that automated one from Patrick saying "congrats you installed it, now get counted..."

        Thanks for the info.
