Re: No internet after Dapper install--more information

Sky left out a word in the command and changed network-manager to wifi manager, which is a different program. The command should be:

    Code:
    sudo apt-get install knetworkmanager
You can also install from one of the gui's - adept, synaptic, or whatever.

Thanks for checking that. I will try this when I get off work in an hour or so. I am very grateful for all the help and I think your are right about the ubuntu/kubuntu forums compared to the Knoppix forums. But, if I have something supernatural (or just plain flaky) going on between my HW, my cable provider, and Kubuntu then I may be doomed with this PC I just built. But I do appreciate all the help y'all have given me.

        Hi,

Sorry for the mistake (or misunderstood) for my defense, it's because I've read ...wi...manager and not netw.rkmanager

        Cheers

          No worries sky.

I tried to install knetworkmanager and network-manager, but apt-get did not find either. I whacked the partitions on the 2nd HDD that I am using for Linux. Initially I installed from the live CD. I am currently downloading the DVD. I will then try a fresh install and see what happens.

I have been using the i386 version, but I have an AMD 64 proc. Is there any reason why I should or should not use the 64 version?

Re: No internet after Dapper install--more information

Booted from the Kubuntu Dapper DVD, no change. I still cannot connect to the internet. But as before, when I boot from the Knoppix 5 CD graphics work fine and I can browse the internet. So, the same NIC, same cable modem, and the same ISP a Linux can browse. THat makes me suspect drivers. But, I don't know that I can just sh the nvidia nforce 430 driver on a Kubuntu install right out of the box (so to speak).

Even thought people install Knoppix on HDDs, the Knoppix site recommends against it. They suggest going directly to Debian. A quick perusal there leaves me with the impression that Debian is not packaged nearly as nicely as Kubintu/Ubuntu, but I don't know what else to try to get this K dapper install to work for me

              Hi,

About the debian install (or not) for me, you can give it a try and if it's working well (I'm not sure it will as they are usually using previous version compared to kubuntu at least in stable and unstable repos). Anyway you can try to install and then if you really like kubuntu, point to kubuntu repos and install kubuntu-desktop (It should work, I never tried but I got it from debian expert)

About 64 bits version, you can get it a try if you don't mind not to have all staff working as in 686 version like flash (it's the biggest lack for me now)

              Hope it helps

Some people like Mepis, which is like Kubuntu, but sometimes will deal with hardware that Kubuntu doesn't and vice versa. Mepis 6.0 is based on Ubuntu, but is not the same as Kubuntu.

There are many distros based on Knoppix, including Kanotix, and Damned Small Linux (and DSL-N).

Thanks for the lead randcoop. I installed Mepis, didn't even need to wipe out my dapper install. Surfing the web (logged into Mepis right now). Uses the KDE and seems quite easy to use.

                  Thanks for all your help.

Re: No internet after Dapper install--more information

Glad that it finally worked out for you with Mepis. It's remarkable (and terrible, I think) that Kubuntu couldn't recognize a connection that Mepis could. Mepis, as I said, uses Ubuntu as its base, and you now will be able to use Ubuntu repositories and Mepis repositories for adding and upgrading your software.

I was a Mepis user for more than a year before I switched to Kubuntu. I don't necessarily like one better than another. When I had Mepis 3.4 (before Mepis was Ubuntu-based), it was unable to recognize a (slightly) older sound card that Kubuntu immediately ran.

This kind of thing happens all the time in Linux: run ndiswrapper under Kanotix and it works on your network card; run the same program with the same card under Fedora Core and you can't get it to work.

But I'm glad that yours worked.

By the way, www.mepislovers.com is an excellent forum for Mepis users.
