    really old compaq install help

ok, i was wondering how to install from a floppy drive, it wont boot from the cd, even with the alternate cd. So i am resorting to the floppy drive and would like some help, any suggestions on how to do this?

actually, i got it to boot with the help of a floppy, but when i go to install in text mode, it will load it to about 80% or sometimes even past 100%, but then my computer restarts. This happens every time. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

I define "really old". What kind of processor does it have? How much RAM? How big is the hard drive? What kind of graphics processor does it have and how much memory does the graphics processor have? If your system is REALLY old, you'd probably be better off running a distro that's designed for old and low-powered systems. I have heard good things about Damn Small Linux and Puppy Linux. Check them out at http://distrowatch.com/ I understand there's a new release of Puppy that's just come out.

You might have better luck at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...veWithFloppies (only 1 m in from). The link is for Breezy but it should work for Breezy.

I still think that if your computer is old and slow, and your hard drive is small, you'd be better off with a distro that is designed for those conditions. You can switch to Kubuntu when you decide you like Linux enough to put in on your REAL computer.

Xubuntu is completley different and so even on my really old system that only just managed Xubuntu, i still have Kubuntu because it has more programs (or just better/more useful ones).

            Thanks

You are aware that you can have the XFCE (Xubuntu) desktop environment, which is better/faster for older computers, and install your favourite apps on top of it?
