partitioning on installation

Hi Folks,

I've installed Kubuntu v6.06. During installation there is the possibility to make user defined partitions. A few days ago I installed it already. Everything went fine with partitioning. After a BIOS-Update I had trouble with my Windows installation and had to install it for new. So I installed also Kubuntu again. In step 5 where I have to create/select the paritions there is nothing shown. When I press <Continue>, an Exception is thrown that says that there is an error. The installation breaks.

The partitioning tool itself (which is available in Kubuntu after boot from CD) is able to create the partitions. Does anyone have an idea how I can solve this problem? Installing Kubuntu in another way?

Which option did you pick in the first screen of step 5? I would think that, if you had just re-installed windoze, it would have taken the entire hard drive for itself, in one gigantic partition. If that was the case, then you should have clicked the option allowing you to "resize IDE1 master..." (I'm quoting from the installation screen shots that PDR60 posted here YMMV, if you have more than one drive.

You should free up 10 or 15 GB for Kubuntu. You should leave a swap partition of one GB or 2 x RAM, whichever is smaller, and make the rest into a single Linux ext3 partition.

I have two hard disk drives installed. Both are SerialATA. The first has several partitions for Windows, the second is completely empty. I've selected the second drive and then I've selected the option to partition by my own. Normally the partitions of the second drive should be visible then (or the ability to create, delete resize the partitions). The screen is empty. If I press the continue button, the installer crashes.

P.S.: I installed it already like this, with the same steps. Before the BIOS-Update it works fine.

I'm sorry. I still don't understand your problem. From your description, there seem to be several possibilities. If the drive is empty, you won't see any partitions to resize or delete. However, you can still create new partitions with the create button, if you see it. If you don't see the create button, I would suspect a defective install CD. But that doesn't seem likely if you installed successfully with the same CD, before. Are you expecting to see the partitions that you made before?

Yes. I expect to see either the already created partitions or the possibility to create and delete partitions. I've added screen shots how it looks like. Sorry, but it is in german. I've done it also in english, but the images were corrupted and I didn't want to do it again

In the first image you can see the selection of the hard drive. There are three physical drives. The first is normal ATA and the second and third are serial ATA. I've selected the last hard drive. The second image shows the options to prepare the hard drive. I'm able either to reduce the existing partitions to use the new free space, or to delete the whole disk, or to modify the partition table by hand. I've selected the third option.
The third image shows the error. The heading says "Prepare partitions". The partitions are not visible. There is no possibility to create, delete or modify a partition. If I press "Continue" nothing happens. If I press "Continue" again, the exception which is shown in fourth image raises up.
As I said, this kind of installation worked already. If I use the option to let the installer create the partition table, the installation works fine, too.

P.S.: I'll use more than one post to be able to provide all four screen shots.

Thank you. Now I understand your problem. This does not mean that I know how to solve it. It appears that you have already tried the workaround that I would have suggested specifically to let the installer have the whole disk, and apparently it worked. I would suggest that you file a bug report at the Malone site so that the developers can attempt to solve it.

This is the first release of (K)Ubuntu that uses this installer. There were significant problems with Ubiquity prior to the release. It appears that not all were solved.

I thought the photos were an excellent idea. It's sometimes difficult to describe a problem verbally, even in one's native language. I'm sure that I would not have been half as eloquent in German as you were in English.
