Shortcoming in installer - monitor frequency too high

During installation, even when selecting VGA safe, the screen will go black as soon as the GUI installer loads.  I've tried several parameters, and lowering the resolution to 640x480x16, but no matter what the frequency is still to great.  The monitor indicates it is an issue with the refresh rate.

I don't know of any valid parameters to lower the frequency, I tried
xvrefresh=60 and xhrefresh=80 to no avail.  I doubt those are valid kernel parameters available for the kubuntu installation.

I have an old monitor on my PC workbench.  Even Microsoft Windows XP installation installs with a monitor refresh rate frequency of 60Hz.

Did the developers feel the need for that extra clearness in the stupid graphical installer, so they decided to set the default monitor refresh rate high?  I mean, for an installer it should be 60Hz, as it is just an installer!!  Lets not sacrifice compatibility for eye candy during installation.

Is it possible to lower the refresh rate frequency for the kubuntu desktop installer?

Very annoying, and shortsighted of the developers!

Some other cheat codes to try: vsync=60; (directly sets the refresh rate); vga=normal; vga=0; (these two are the same thing, a best guess); vga=769 (that's 8 bit color, 640 x 480)

Totally agree. I have a widescreen LCD monitor, and the LiveCD/Installer doesn't show anything beyond when X tries to start. My monitor just gives the "Out of Range" and show nothing. Even setting the VGA type at boot-up does nothing, because X tries to start with a higher 60Hz, which LCD doesn't do.

So after ordering a CD from ShipIt, now I can't install Dapper

And I can't find any - working - instructions on how to get the CD to boot into X sucessfully so I can install Dapper.

did you try what askrieger said? if so, hurry and file a bug before the Kubuntu 6.06 point release so this issue can be corrected.

I have a similar problem. My 19" LCD monitor displays a "input not supported" message even in the text console. Booting with vsync=60 did clear up the problem, but I still consider it a bug. There are so many people using LCDs these days, that it's inexcusable.

Once the LiveCD finally booted, X displayed a squished Windows XP shutting down screen, and I could see the initial boot screen displayed across the top of the screen four times in miniature. Very bizarre

Switching to the text console and editing xorg.conf to default to 16 solved the problem. I have an XGI Volari V3 video card, using vesa driver.
