    "Kernel Panic" before installation

Hi everyone, total Linux noob here.

I've been wanting to install Linux on my Windows 2000 machine, and I've successfully re-partitioned my primary hard drive for Kubuntu. However, with every CD that I've tried (Kubuntu Dapper AMD64 Desktop, Kubuntu Dapper AMD64 Alternative, Ubuntu Dapper AMD64 Desktop), I've verified the CDs as OK, but it always ends up at the same result after booting the LiveCD menu and selecting the first option: "Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!"

    My system is as follows:
    Athlon 64 3500+
    ABIT AX8 Socket 939 Motherboard
    GeForce 7600 GT
    SB Audigy
    1GB RAM
    LiteOn 16x DVD Writer/Re-Writer

I have to admit that I have no knowledge of Linux; I've been wanting to leave Windows behind as I have to admit I'm scared of updating to WinXP. I hope someone can help.

    Thanks!

    Hi,

It's really strange problem, but it can happen... Did you try with 386 version of desktop cd ?

    Cheers
