installation of GRUB bootloader on Harddisk

    Hello,

I have just had several attempts at installing Kubuntu. On the webpage I am told that I can select the HD on which to install the bootloader. I have to install the bootloader on my linux partition, so this is important for me to work!
However, during the installation process, I never get prompted where I want to install GRUB... it simply installs it! And then I can't change it anymore!

Does anyone know, how I can set the location for the installation of GRUB?
    Thanks,
    Jenny

    On the webpage
    Url ?

    Do You mean this ?

    Installing Ubuntu
    http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/installing.html

    or

    Illustrated Dual Boot Site
    http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/

    or something else

Do you have MS Windows (+kubuntu) or another linux distribution (+kubuntu) ?
    Before you edit, BACKUP !

Why there are dead links ?

Re: installation of GRUB bootloader on Harddisk

      Hello,

No, this is not what I mean.
I have Windows XP one one HD and want to install Kubuntu on a second HD.
Now, on the Kubuntu webpage, they explicitly say that during installation (not using the live cd), I can choose the location of the bootloader. But I was never given this option, so Grub just overwrote my Windows Bootloader and I couldnt boot to Windows anymore! I want to avoid this, in the way that I install Grub on my Linux HD.

      Thanks for your help,
      Jenny

Actually, what the website says is that you can choose the location for Grub if you use the Alternate Installer CD. The Desktop CD makes no such claim, because you can't choose the location of Grub if you use the graphical espresso installer on the "Desktop" CD. I must admit, that is not very obvious and you are far from the first person to be led astray.

I haven't tried the alternate installer so I don't know how obvious or obscure the location choice is for Grub. Of course all is not lost if you have Grub installed the MBR of hda. You simply have to go in and set Windoze to install from hd0,0 and Linux to install from hd1,0 in /boot/grub/menu.list The changes should be obvious.
