Question about .sh and software repositories

    Hello,
I have just installed a Kubuntu system on my laptop, after almost one year without using linux, however, when I tried to install some shell script package by running say, for example:
    sh ./software.sh or sh software.sh
    nothing seem to work.
The other thing is, the repositories does not seem to work as well, I can see I have to install some critical updates, but when i tried to install them by selecting the full upgrade option, the system simply said there is a problem with downloads and closed up the whole program. Any help on this one?
Finally, is Synaptics still available for Kubuntu? I really like to have it.
    Thanks!

    Regards,
    Anyi

You have to be more specific than "nothing seem to work." Do you get an error messages? If so, what? First of all, anything you run has to be made executable, and most software you install--if you want it to be installed systemwide--should be installed with administrative privileges:
    Code:
    chmod +x software.sh
    sudo ./software.sh
The other thing is, the repositories does not seem to work as well, I can see I have to install some critical updates, but when i tried to install them by selecting the full upgrade option, the system simply said there is a problem with downloads and closed up the whole program. Once again, specific error messages (just copy and paste them in here) would be more informative. Can you post the output of these terminal commands?
    Code:
    sudo aptitude update
    cat /etc/apt/sources.list
Linux is ready for the desktop--but whose desktop?<br />How to install software in Kubuntu

Re: Question about .sh and software repositories

Sorry, one more thing, this is the error message I have got:
There was an error commiting changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages.

          Hope this helps!

          Thanks a lot!

Re: Question about .sh and software repositories

Well, there's no installation shell script in the Firefox .tar.gz. It can be run as is.

In fact, once you get your repositories working correctly, you should use this script to install Firefox properly.

It sounds as if you have some kind of configuration issue, though. Are you accessing internet by proxy? Clearly your internet connection works, but you're having trouble accessing the repositories.

Well, I have router at home since I have more than one computer, would that do anything bad? How can I configure to by pass it though?

              thanks!

I'm sorry I can't be more help with the details. I use a router, too, but everything works just fine. I wasn't sure if you had some kind of special situation.

Re: Question about .sh and software repositories

Never mind guys, I managed to resolve the problem myself. The problem is with my NetGear VPN router at home that has a function called Keyword Blocking, which blocked out the word "dapper" in there. After disabling it, everything works fine now. Thanks a lot to everyone who replied!
