    installer crash at 71%

Hey guys, after previously running fedora core 1-4, and then migrating to kubuntu for the past year i decided to (after backing up important stuff) do a clean install of the new kubuntu 6.06LTS onto my ibm t30 laptop. Unfortunately I ALWAYS get stuck at 71% completion of the installer. It reaches 71% and then locks up, no mouse, no keys, no nothing. here are the details

system is a 1.8 ghz pentium, with 512 ram.
hard drive = 40 gig laid out as the following:
(from my old grub configuration, verified by partition magic and qtparted)

HD0,1 : 15 gig windows XP partition (ntfs)
HD0,3 3 gig IBM Rescue Partition
    HD0,2: 50 Mb Boot partition (ext2)
    HD0,4 (extended partition)
    HD0,5: 512 MB linux-swap
HD0,6: 19 Gb root partition (used to be reiserfs, but since this version of kubuntu supported jfs out of the box i switched to that and reformatted) (JFS)

the layout is such that HDA1, 3 and 4 are logical, 5 and 6 are extended/virtual partitions.

Priot to installing I ran the check media check and it passed and begins installation. I have tried redownloading the iso from both direct and from torrents, as well as reburning the file and burning it on different machines. No matter what I do when it reaches 71% completion on the installer (no sooner and no later) it pretty much locks up.

Help would be appreciated, or I'm going to have to revert to (*SHUDDER*) fedora or (double shudder) gentoo (which i really dont want to do for this laptop)

    - thanks all

Are you trying to install from the live CD? I had a similar problem with the live CD crashing repeatedly at the same point. So I tried the alternate (text) install CD and it worked the first time. It might be worth trying.

I tried Kubuntu 6.06 too. Installed from the livecd on reiserfs / partition. The installer always crashed, but at 12% copying files. I tried again, but using ext3 filesystem and everything worked ok.

      Any ideas?

Does anyone try to use the md5sums file on the burned cd to check the quality of the burn? The technique is described on the Ubuntu Wiki It saved me from trying to install from a coaster.

Yes, I always do that. This was correct and in my case it seems that I'm not the only one getting the reiserfs problem. There's a bug opened about it.

have you tried the install using EXT3 as the format for the HDD
if you still have problems try the Alternate install CD ISO ...

Try burning the iso at slower speed like 4x or 8x as that is what resolved the stuck installer for me.
