    [c] Installation Problems

I'm trying to install Kubuntu onto my computer. The CD boots up to the menu and I select Install. It gets to the point to where it is "Creating Live CD User" then it just sits there. After a while, the screen goes black and I get this error ---
Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel.
[4294820.256000] Buffer I/O error on hdd, logical block 284790
    What does this mean?

I've ran Check Disk on both of the hard drives in my computer and defragmented them. It still does not work. I am using the Desktop CD; Is this the wrong one to be using? I would like to try it out first, then if I like it, install it. Can I do this with the Desktop CD?

To me it sounds like something a low-level format might clear up.  Go to your hard drive manufacturer's website and download a diagnostic utility.  (Ex. Maxtor's diagnostic software: PowerMax.)

Sometimes CHKDSK and Scandisk will not find and correct all problems on your HD.  That's where the manufacturer comes in with their software.
