    Boot lockup at "Battery Check"

    Problem: Hang on Boot.
System hangs at "Battery Check", whether computer is on Battery or Mains.
Selecting "recovery mode" allows boot to continue to default login, but entering "startkde" or "startx" fails (sorry, I don't know how to capture boot-thread logs at this time).

System: HP nx6125 laptop (AMD Turion 64) 1GB RAM; 40MB partition on HD for Linux
OS: Win XP SP2 installed on partition 1, Kubuntu 6.06 LTS (AMD64 ver) installed on partition 2.

    Suggestions? Fixes?
