Command Line only installation

Is it possible to do a command line only installation of Kubuntu?

I only need a few tools and do not want a gui.

yes. This is called a server install. Simply download the server installer CD (i386 -- Full page), burn it and put it in the CD drive, and type server at the boot prompt. This will install the bare-minimum of ubuntu packages. To install more, simple apt-get/apt-cache or aptitude (if you want a CLI GUI) to find and install them
