[c] Kernel panic only on AMD64 boot

Please help me with the following cryptic message. I am trying to boot Kubuntu 6.06 AMD64 and each time i try the following appears.

    "{pci_mmcfg_read +239} RSP"
    "CR2: 00000000e0100000"
"<0>Kernel panic -not syncing: attempted to kill init!"

after this the machine just sits, need to flick power switch on wall to get it back to life.

I have tried a myriad of options only one gets me past the lockup, and it is "acpi=off" this gets me to the lovely "mounting root blah blah blah" but it never does because with this option it claims it can't access the dvd drives which are both ide.

The i386 version boots no problem but as ever i want a 64bit desktop on my 64bit box, not too much to ask. *Is it?*

The install options etc are identical on both i386 and AMD64 ie"preseed/file=cdrom/preseed/kubuntu........." But no joy. Hmph I can't go back to 32bit kubuntu after using the 5x series in 64bit mode.

Regards Zara... *i hate asking for help with something which is probably trivial, but hey we all need to swallow our pride now and then!*

Re: [c] Kernel panic only on AMD64 boot

Did all this happen before or after yesterday's kernel upgrades? If before, give it a day or two for the updates to percolate into the CDs, then download again (make sure that the posted md5 sum is DIFFERENT from the last download) and reinstall (be sure to save everything in your /home/ directory tree). If it was after the upgrade, the same advice applies, but I'd suggest waiting a week or two. Meanwhile, you can work perfectly well, if about 10% slower in 32 bit mode. Three or four years from now, when the more of the application base is optimized for 64 bit, this would be a greater disaster.

I know this is cold comfort, and easy for me to say since my AMD64 install is working, but I'm sorry I have no better advice for you.

Happened before any update, so maybe fingers crossed all will come good in a week or so.

Thanks for the reply, i'll ceretainly post an answer myself if I ever work one out! In the meantime thanks for your helpful response
