Okay gang...on June 3rd I installed Ubuntu/Kubuntu 6.06 aka Dapper Drake on my system--an hP with the i810 chipset. I have had no problems running other distros.
I always install Ubuntu and then pull the packages for the Kubuntu desktop so that I have a full complement of apps and libraries. I usually use KDE, hence, I installed Kubuntu.
After shutting down the system on Sunday night June 11, I turned it on Monday evening--June 12 and after the blue Kubuntu logo appeared and all of the white scrolling boot messages went by, instead of kdm taking over, it went back to the blue Kubuntu logo with a blue bar.
When I did a ctrl+alt+f1 to get a terminal, I logged in and tried to start X and it failed with a ring buffer error. Not knowing how to correct the situation, I reinstalled taking 2 hours of my time after work to get the system back to where it was with both Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed.
When I ran the updater and rebooted, the same thing happened: no X and a ring buffer failure.
I reinstalled again using only Ubuntu and the system is fine and stable. There must be a bug in an update because my system was running fine until this past weekend.
Anyone else having this issue? I am holding off on adding the Kubuntu desktop until more information comes to light as I think there is a bug behind this seeing that it is repeatable.
And I ran Breezy Badger this way without any problems.
Suggestions anyone?
