Extremely uncool behavior of "standard" install

For the first time ever, I tried the "standard" install CD for the latest beta released a couple of days ago.

First of all, I like it a lot less than the more traditional one. It made me very nervous telling me about "preparing partions" during the automatic loading (I have three other OSs and I want to preserve them, thank you very much).

    Fortunately that was OK.

Next uncool part was giving me a partition configuration screen and not being sure what I was supposed to do (I was expecting to be able to choose the mount points as well). Apparently not. I clicked continue, it asked me if I was sure, said NO, and continued anyway. Nice! Not...

Finally, the cake: It never asked anything about booting options. It silently went ahead, overwrote the boot sector and pointed it to its own boot location. It didn't even detect my other Linux configurations!

All in all, I'm extremely unimpressed with this new installation method. I would stick to the "regular" text-based one except that it doesn't work for me (read thread on mouse and network problems). I can't say I would recommend this distribution so far, even though Breezy was my biggest hope to replace Mandrake.

there is a bug with the install from CD: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bug/46909

Also, Dapper is BETA, so it won't be all peachy when your using it as your main OS.

Re: Extremely uncool behavior of "standard" install

First, I agree that the new live CD/install has not done well. It started out in Alpha versions by destroying whole hard drives. Now, it simply fails in the ways described in this thread.

Second, I think it's wrong to call Dapper a Beta. Dapper is now RC, or Release Candidate. As the developers explain, it should be ready for prime time, with some few exceptions to be pointed out by testers. The final is scheduled for three days from now. There will be minor tweaks, but most people will be able to use the RC without problems (or should be able to).

I guess I'm lucky that my installation from the Desktop CD has been uneventful, except for the automatic installation of GRUB on the MBR of hda. Probably it's because I used the RC version rather than the latest "Flight". Maybe they fixed a few things in between Flight 7 and RC.

All I could say is that the installer in RC Desktop CD seems to be working fine from my end. (It also gave choices where to mount certain partitions)
