Login failure

I have W98 and Kubuntu 6.06 on a laptop.
This has worked well until yesterday when I could not login even though I have the correct login details. I keep getting the message: Login Failed

How do I proceed?

If you can use w98 without issues, then I would say that you have a corrupted profile. You can verify this by hitting CTL+ALT+F1 and going to a text prompt, then logging in using your username and password. If it still doesn't let you in, then you are either entering the wrong password, or there is physical damage to your drive. Find out the manufacturer of your hdd and create a boot disk from their website to run a diagnostic on the drive. Let us know if you can get in, first off.

The problem is a hardware problem i.e. the keyboard is faulty and I have ordered an USB mini keyboard and hope that will solve matters.
