kubuntu 6.06 LTS freezes up on boot up.

I have 2 hard drives fitted to my computer. One has Win 98 on it and the other has kubuntu 6.06LTS. I am not a computer buff in any way and do not understand a lot of the language. I had been deleting a lot of emails etc from "Thunderbird" prior to having a go at "backing up". I had to close down the computer before I had finished the job and when I went to open it up the next day, when the kubuntu screen came up the progress bar just started and then it froze up. The screen read "Loading essential Drivers - ok" Next line read "Mounting root file system" and that's as far as it went. I tried the reset button a few times and stopped and restarted the computer a few times, but that's as far as it gets.

I have had to go back to my Microsoft hard drive to send this email.

Look forward and would appreciate help in very plain language if anyone can help. Thanks Allistair

in order to investigate the issue, we should at least have access to the log files.

if you still have the "recovery" boot option on the boot menu, could you try
and see if your box boots with that option?

if your linux didn't boot in single user (recovery) mode, we would then have
to boot with a live cd and try and work from there...

Hi Jankushka, Thank you for responding. When I hit the "Recovery mode" the last screen showed the following:-

      Regin:Running/scripts/local-present...
      (4294675.830000) Attempting manual resume
(4294675.830000) end - request: I/O error, dev hdb, sector 10233405
      (4294675-830000) Kernel panic-not syncing:
I/O error reading memory image (4294675-830000)

I put the kubuntu 6.06 LTS CD in but it did not show up on my desktop.

      Cheers Allistair

Re: kubuntu 6.06 LTS freezes up on boot up.

looks like a bad sector on your hdb hard drive.
which we might be able to fix (possibly easily) if only we could boot with the live cd...
there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to boot with the live cd, so...
sorry if you feel i'm asking stupid questions, but:
        - are you sure the kubuntu cd you're using is a desktop (live) cd?
        - have you changed the boot order in your bios menu so that cdrom is the first in the list?

if yes, then pop your cd in and restart your box.
        it MUST boot...

otherwise, try burning the edgy live and boot with that one: it makes no difference in light
of the recover procedure we need to run...

Re: kubuntu 6.06 LTS freezes up on boot up.

Hi Jankushka, The hard drive is only about 3 months old, and has been working fine till now. The CD I'm using, according to the cardboard packet it is in, is an official kubuntu CD and is a Live CD according to the packet.
Is there such a thing as dead CD ?
If I knew where the BIOS menu was I wouldn't dare to change anything.
When you say I should burn the edgy live and use that, I presume you mean for it to be downloaded to a blank CD. If that's what you mean, where do I find an edgy live ? Cheers Allistair

Hi again Jankushka, after sending off the last email I tried the CD again and this time it booted up ok. If the HD has a fault, how do I overcome the fault so that it can be relied on in the future ? Cheers Allistair

Hi Jankushka, The saga continues. Today, I went to boot up without the CD and it froze up at "Mounting root file system" again. Put CD in and tried again but it froze at the same place again. I then turned power off and waited about 1/2 a minute, repowered and tried again, but still froze at the same place !!!! Re: kubuntu 6.06 LTS freezes up on boot up.

when i say "burn" i indeed mean to download the live edgy on a blank cd.
you can find it here: http://www.kubuntu.com/download.php

if you managed to boot from the cd once, it means the bios boot order is ok.
no need to change that, then...

booting from a live cd should work consistently. the behaviour you report
is kinda weird. i can only assume is the cd's fault.

anyway, what i would like you to do, once you manage to boot the machine
with the live cd, is to run the following command from a terminal emulator
(which you find under Main Menu -> System):
                Code:
                fdisk -l /dev/hdb
this command prints the partition table of the hdb hard drive.
i need to know the name/s of the linux partition/s on that disk.
then i need to know what type of file systems you have used for your linux.
i assume you have ext3 file systems, but i need to make sure, 'cause the
recovery procedure is file system's specific...
basically will need to run the following command on each relevante file system:
                Code:
                fsck.<file_system_type> -p /dev/<partition_with_the_file_system_of_interest>
                cheers

Hi Jankushka, I'm on dial up service at the moment, and when I went to download the "Edgy" file the message that came up in the download box was that it was downloading 694 MB @ 2 KB/sec, and was going to take 98 hours 40 mins. I will try and get a CD downloaded from someone with Broadband and get back to you. Should I do so through the forum? Cheers Allistair

                    good.

i should be away the whole of next week.
so, yeah, better through the forum...
many people (hopefully) read this, so you'll not be left on your own.
i already posted what i would like you to try...

btw, does the I/O error you posted earlier on come up sistematically
when you boot in recovery mode?

                    cheers

I typed this out and thought I'd hit "post" but it didn't show up so have typed it out again. The response I received from fdisk -l/dev/hdb is as follows:-
                        fdisk: invalid option --/
                        Usage:fdisk [-b SSZ][-u]DISK Change partition table
                        fdisk -l [-b SSZ][-u] DISK List partition table/s
fdisk -s PARTITION Give partition size/s in blocks
                        fdisk -v Give fdisk version
Have DISK in something like /dev/hdb or /dev/sda and PARTITION is something like /dev/hda7
-u: give Start and End in sector [instead of cylinder] units
-b 2048: [for certain MO disks] use 2048-byte sectors

Under "Disk & File Systems Settings" came the following:-

                        Moint Point Type Device
                        Optical Disk Brother DCP115C /dev/sda
                        Optical Disk CD-RW 40x12 /dev/hdd
                        Optical Disk DVD Rom /dev/hdc
                        1 Partition 4.9 Gb / Ext 3 /dev/hdb1
                        2 Partition 996.2 Mb swap swap //dev/hdb2
                        3 Partition 68.7 Gb /home Ext 3
                        /media/sda1 /media/sda1 vfat /dev/sda1

                        Where to from here?

                          all right.
the error message you got from the fdisk command is a syntax error.
you'd really need to leave a blank between -l and /dev/hdb.
                          not a big deal, though.
you got the info i was looking for from"disks and file systems settings".

If the HD has a fault, how do I overcome the fault so that it can be relied on in the future ?
the bad news is that if we're really facing a "bad sector", then there's not much we can do.
we would need something that moved the file on our problematic sector somewhere else
and that marked that sector so that the system stopped using it. i'm not totally up-to-date
with all the new utilities, but, ttbomk, there's nothing that does that...

we could try and work out where that sector is and repartition your disk so that we...well,
kinda physically work around it...we leave that bad sector in an unsed (however small)
                          partition...

i would welcome any experience on bad sectors from anybody reading this thread...

i'd still like you to try to copy and paste the following commands in a terminal emulator, after
                          starting from the live cd...

                          get administrator privileges...
                          Code:
                          sudo -i
try a "file system check" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fsck) on your linux root file system...
                          Code:
                          fsck.ext3 -f -p /dev/hdb1
the "-f" option tells the fsck utility to go on and check the file system even if it looks clean.
the "-p" option tells the fsck utility to only automatically fix problems, that can be safely fixed
                          without human intervention...

if the fsck completes all right, then try and boot in recovery mode again, otherwise post the
                          messages you get...

Tried to boot up without CD or DVD to see if it had come right, as yesterday it booted with the CD and DVD ok. It froze up at "Mounting root file system". Closed it down and put in the 6.06 CD and booted up. Same story, it froze up at the same place. Tried the reset and then closed down. Even removed the power cable completely. Put the 6.10 DVD in and booted up. Same story, it froze at the same place. So I can't implement the things you wanted me to try. Cheers Allistair

your I/O error will not come right automagically.
i think you have a damaged sector on your hard drive.
and if it's damaged, there's no way to get it back.
there might be a way to get around it, though.
which is what i'd like to try and do...

given your last post, i kinda suspect you're still booting from the hd.
(which would mean you're sometimes able to get past the I/O error, for whatever reason)
in fact, booting from a cd or dvd is not a random event.
provided the cd/dvd are burned all right (i.e., without errors) your system has to boot.

you'll have to verify your "boot sequence".
when you power up your box, you should see some message somewhere on your screen.
it asks you to hit something to...enter "setup".
it could be "ESC" or "DELETE" or "F2" or "F12" or ... (depends on the system)
when you're in "setup mode", look for the "boot" sequence entry.
make sure the order in which the devices are accessed is the one you need.
have the cd at the top, then put the dvd and then put the ide hard drives.
make sure you save any changes before exiting.
then pop your cd/dvd in and try again.

                              i really gotta go now.
i'm leaving in about 5 hours and i gotta get some sleep.
i'll be away from tomorrow for some 10 days.

if nobody picks up this thread, i'd suggest you delete it and open a new one.
                              call it: I/O error
post the error message you get and explain you can only boot every so often...
