Newbie Install of Kubuntu 6.10 - Slam Dunk!!

OK, I admit it, I'm a Linux newbie! Started out working on graphic projects on Macs in the late '80s, and after a few years began to play around on my own with MS-DOS and Windows 3.x. Went from there to Win 95, 98SE, and then to XP. Basically there is nothing much that stumps me any longer with Microsoft's consumer OS offerings, But while I've casually observed as Linux became more and more mainstream, I've not had any inclination to make the move in that direction -- at least not until VISTA arrived. I latched onto a couple of the late betas of Vista, and found them to be the most objectionable excuses for an OS that I'd ever run into. The new Mac TV commercial that has the Windows character being prompted at every turn to decide whether or not he REALLY wants to do whatever it is that he is about to do just about sums up my feelings on the subject. That, plus the fact that Vista is just about the most obscenely bloated OS I've ever seen, pushed me past the edge, and after looking around at Linux distros and doing a lot of reading, Kubuntu was the distro that I settled on. I set up a second 40gb hard drive on my 1800+ Athlon machine to install to, and found that the whole process was absolutely straight forward with no glitches or problems of any sort encountered. Using Grub to dual boot, the process is absolutely painless, and except to verify the dual boot feature I've not been back into my XP Pro installation since. Kubuntu just works, period. I've got my network up and running, and have used Adept to install certain items. I've set up my scanner and printer without any problems whatsoever. And now after five days of exciting discovery and more "Oh's!!" and "Awe's" than I can count, all I can say is that I love what I've seen so far!! Kubuntu appears flawless in design and execution, and for one you can count me as a convert from Windows!!!!!!!!!! ...Jon Luke

Thanks for the warm welcome as I begin transitioning from Windows to Linux!!

By the way, where in Australia is Grenfell located? One day in the not too distant future my wife and I would like to visit down under. We've watched some excellent documentaries on life in your country, and having grown up in rural desert areas here in Arizona there is ever so much in your outback that reminds me of home. With the exception of those unique animal species that inhabit your deserts, much of what's there looks to be closely related in many ways to what we have here -- so some day I'd like to see a big chunk of it for myself!
