installation crashed

strange problem
i was trying to install dapper drake from an original shipit cd and the installer stopped. it happened after copying files, when the installer was searching for some server (sorry, i dont know how it is called in english - i used polish language; if i was asked to translate it, i would say "mirror server" - in polish "serwer lustrzany")
strange thing, i succeed to install dapper drake last year in june, then i was using alternate install cd (but it shouldn't have anything in common)

can someone explain it to me?

My wild guess: the system tried to update itself by means of online repositories but was lacking a properly set-up network connection (?).

maybe it tried to do so, but for sure network connection was set up properly (i checked it with my second computer)

... which does not proof that the first machine was able to see this network - you get my point
