    Kubuntu solution to linmodem?

    Hi all again,

has anyone made any sense of the Linmodem websites, drivers etc.
i find it the most convoluted mess of difficult to follow how to's , broken links, jargon, stuff for gurus and so on.

all i want to do is get a little modem with a supported chips set working.

is there a nice simple kubuntu style fix for this?

    maybe

    ........apt-get install make-my-bl**dy-modem-work.......

    for example

    thanks for looking,

    cheers,

    derek

save yourself the headache and buy an serial external modem. I have a robotics 56k faxmodem I found in a goodwill store for $2. works immediatly with kubuntu, damn small linux and suse. no drama.

      hi,

thanks, i did that, in fact i got one for free.

the problem is i have a laptop and i like to sit in the lounge near the heater and i have to have a power supply a modem and a bunch of cords everywhere.

and i know there is a nice little modem inside the laptop.

this issue should be addressed, i think it is the most off-putting thing for new users wishing to convert from windows.

there is no way i can convince my friends......

...........look it does this, and this..... but.. you have to but one of these and hide it somewhere just to use the net.

linux has made huge progress in recent years, look at the hassle it was just print something a few years ago, but there has been no real progress over the modem issue.

      thanks for the reply

at this point dial up is going out of style and is sometimes given away for free. I get 20 free hours a month for having high speed Internet. I used it once in the middle of some cow town motel and that was the first time in 4 years. I know in some parts of the free world your choices are dial up and satellite but you have to deal with it. Dial up is considered obsolete.

Dial-up, diskettes, and ATA/Serial/Parrellel/etc. are not going away any time soon sadly.

55% of canadians are still on dial-up according to the CBC, and they say the americans have 60%-70% of their population on dial-up.

after doing a little research myself I found dial up users in the range of 11%-65% depending on which site you went to. Here are a few links.

as far as the rest of the stuff goes, as a field pc tech I am having a hard time seeing ,floppy drives, floppies that still work, anyone use a a serial device for personal desktop use? Printers are starting to become usb/nic connections only. There are too many ATA hard drives to discard for the moment and SATA is still a bit too expensive as compared to ATA but most new computers are coming with SATA HD or at least the option to use it.

              Re: Kubuntu solution to linmodem?

i actually solved this problem for lt winmodems.
there is a lot of info out there but unfortunately not all of it is correct or still current.
i will start a new thread on how to do it.
it was a matter of sifting through the net for the correct info.

p.s. dial-up will be around for a long time here in australia.
my sister pays $60 a month for broadband, i pay $8 for unlimited dial up.

I still see lots of floppy drives; few people that I know have abandoned it entirely. It's still useful for the occasional task. I haven't ever seen a serial-port device, like no joke, never. I still have 2 parrallel port printers and a para-port scanner, though. They're not extinct yet, even though USB lasers are getting better price-wise.

And 65vitesse, you picked the right option. Not only are you paying WAAAY less, your sister probably gets just double the speed most of the time. From what I remember, "high-speed" can mean anything 200kb/s and higher.

wow thats crazy pricing. here in miami I pay 37.95 for a 3mb. from bellsouth. There are the smaller isp charging less but also with limited support in terms of hours.
