Onboard sound very weak (VIA AC97)

Hi there!

I have installed the latest image and updated everything. However, the master volume is very weak. WindowsXP is at least 18dB louder, without maxing out the mixer (average output volume).
I'm guessing that somehow the mixer does not get to set the master volume high enough or the cards "output configuration" is not set to analog speakers...

alsa 1.0.11-6ubuntu2 installed, lspci gives me
Multimedia audio controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 60)

Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

Well... I have no idea why but I could resolve the issue by doing the follwing:
* I installed something called alsa-mixer-gui
* I played with all the nobs and sliders
* I shifted something called "VIA DXS" to maximum volume

e viola, I got the normal volume without distortions.

However, It would be nice to know what this "VIA DXS" is and why it was set to minimum.
