refresh rate exceeded ...monitor hangs.....plz help

I am using KUBUNTU with the ati properitiery drivers for my d101ggc and upgraded the screen resolution but in my happiness i also increased the refresh rate to 85 which was not acceptable to the monitor so now when the system starts the monitor doesnot start sighting the error in refresh rate
what should i do
i tried it using the recovery mode but i am able to login only as sudo how do i login as root
and change the refresh rate manually
please explain in detail

Try this:

Start normally, you get blank screen (or something)- Press Ctrl+ Alt+F1 (or F2..F6).

Log in the text mode.

sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

This reconfigures xserver (screen resolution, refresh rate, lot of other stuff). And it makes backup.

sudo /etc/init.d/kdm restart

This restarts kde

Stopping kdm: sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
Starting: sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start
