Acer Travelmate 4070 sound not working

I have an acer tm 4070 with a ALC883 sound device onboard ALSA seems to recognise the sound card but I cannot get any audio out. I have tried forcing the sound module to ALSA, OSS, Enlightened etc instead of the autodetect option in the system setting but no luck.

Does any one have a tip for me to tell me what I need to do to fix this.

Other than that I am very happy with the way the system runs edgy.

After a lot of reading/research I managed to actually get past the "CANNOT CREATE FILE" errors while trying to compile the alsa-drivers module but now when i run ./configure... i get an error message saying that alsa is a module in the kernel and the script aborts does anyone have any clue as to what i should do.

I see edgy was released but on my line it is going to take a month to download thanks to south africa's bandwidth restriction policies.
