I just migrated - Sound help

Hi,
I just migrated from gentoo because the new gcc royally [insert general angry comment here] my apps, and I need it for programming; this is why I switched to kubuntu.

Now, I have no idea how to get sound running on my installation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Please state the kind of sound card you have.
Know if it is in a laptop or PC helps get an answer for you.

Also what app/s you are trying to use for you sound.

The more info you state in about your unit helps get and answer.

With very little go no it would be a guessing game and you might get the best answer for your problem.

Amarok doesn't even work; it just says the playlist is finished when it hasn't actually played a song.

Two tips:

1. Have you tried the Sound section in System Settings ? Does it help at all ?

2. Run KMix, and make sure the output volumes are correctly set.

Yes, I tried KMix, but there's a problem with it. I change the sound card from Intel ICH5 to Dell Sound Blaster Live!, but everytime I reboot it defaults back to ICH5. Also, amarok won't play any of my songs; I click 'play,' and it immediately says 'playlist finished.'

I've used the Sound sectoin, but it hasn't helped at all.

As a former gentoo user, you probably already know that proprietary codecs are required for certain mutlimedia formats. Its just that you mentioned not being able to play anything in Amarok. You need the codecs to play MP3s. This site should be useful to you at least, if it doesn't solve your problem. good luck

*update*
Ok, i just read your last post. It looks as though you have onboard sound (ICH5) and a Sound Blaster Live in your system. If you want to just use the Sound Blaster Live, disable the ICH5 audio in your BIOS settings.

One more thing. If you can't find answers on the Kubuntu forum. try http://www.ubuntuforums.org/

Nah, most free Linux distros don't offer the proprietary codecs "out-of-the-box". You'll at least want libxine-extracodecs, w32codecs, and libdvdcss2. If you want flash on firefox / Konquerer, I recommend you download version 9.0 beta that just came out.

I recently talked to a friend who had a friend who used kubuntu , and he said I needed to go into the 'universal repository' or something to get the codecs. How do I get those?

libxine-extracodecs are available from 'multiverse', for w32codecs and libdvdcss2 you'll need a 3rd party repo (like PLF)
