Installed Nvidia drivers - now X won't start

Hi all, relatively new to Kubuntu, built a new SLI machine and have been using the NV drivers for a while. I now tried installing the full Nvidia drivers from here by following the instructions:

    http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_d..._1.0-8174.html

After running 'sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-8174-pkg1.run' it barfed on a few things, so now I've got gcc installed, linux kernel source and headers.

After that and re-running the setup utility, I rebooted and now it stalls at the Kubuntu screen with starting X. If I run 'startx' from the command line (both kernels as I seem to have two now) it gives the following errors:

    Failed to load module GLX
    Failed to load module Nvidia

..think it's because they're not installed, but can't install because no desktop, so no wifi connection...

    Help!

    thanks,

You need to install a "linux-restricted-modules-xxxxxx". The version of linux-restricted-modules should match the version of linux-image-xxxxxx that you have.

Yay, got it running. Only one minor problem after rebooting, it hung at:

        'starting hardware abstraction layer hald'

...but was okay on the second restart. I'll run it for a few days and see how it behaves.

        Running:

        'glxgears -iacknowledgethatthistoolisnotabenchmark'

        ...gave:

        65312 frames in 5.0 seconds = 13061.792 FPS
        48438 frames in 5.0 seconds = 9687.547 FPS
        78940 frames in 5.0 seconds = 15787.687 FPS
        78235 frames in 5.0 seconds = 15646.851 FPS
        78965 frames in 5.0 seconds = 15792.972 FPS
        79383 frames in 5.0 seconds = 15876.585 FPS
        78838 frames in 5.0 seconds = 15767.594 FPS
        79307 frames in 5.0 seconds = 15861.330 FPS
        76021 frames in 5.0 seconds = 15204.150 FPS

So far so good. Thanks again Jucato.
