ok. i have a compaq presario v3020us. when ever i plug in headphones or speakers into my laptop, the laptop speakers stay on...how can i fix this?

Are you sure you are plugging into the right sound jack.
You should have three jacks. sound in, sound out, and mic.
If you look at the jacks the 'sound in' has an arrow pointing into a circle,
the 'sound out' has an arrow pointing out of the circle, and the three had a small mic by it.
If you have it plugged into the right jack and you have no sound from the headphone or the external speakers, I think your 'sound out' jack might be broken
