Kubuntu 6.06 inst. hang, Intel DG965WH mobo

Last night I tried installing Kubuntu 6.06 on a new system based around an Intel DG965WH mobo and a Core 2 Duo CPU.

It reaches "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel." then freezes.

The same CD installed perfectly on an Intel D945GNT mobo. The memory in the new machine (1024 MB Kingston) is probably okay, as I’ve also run Memtest against it for eight hours, so I was wondering if there might be something about the new CPU or mobo that is incompatible with Kubuntu.

Is it likely that downloading 6.06.1 would help with this board?

The offending machine is currently running W2K without too much drama.

I tried installing at first while the keyboard, mouse and monitor were connected via a Belkin KVM. I tried connecting the peripherals directly, then installing, but it didn't help.

I'm pretty sure, but not completely certain that I compared the MD5 checksum when the download finished. Now I can't find the original 6.06 checksum as it's been replaced by 6.06.1

I'd appreciate anyone's thoughts on this problem.

I downloaded and cut the Kubuntu 6.06.1 alternative .ISO, but both "Install in text mode" and "Check CD for defects" hang as before.

Just tried "Rescue a broken system". The last message displayed is "ACPI: Assume root bridge [\_SB_.PCI0] bus is 0" where it appears once again to have hung.

Would it be worth trying Edgy Eft?

will knoppix boot up on this new machine? So far, I've had outstanding performance with kubuntu and sata drives. Right now it's running on this duocore laptop .. I did change to the smp kernel after the install finished.

On another board someone has said that they have installed Kubuntu 6.06 on an Intel 965 chipset based machine, although I suspect theirs didn't have onboard graphics, as mine does. Another suggestion is that Linux installers generally have problems when installing from an IDE optical drive when there are no IDE hard drives, as is the case for me, but another poster said he'd installed various flavours of Linux on machines that have only SATA hard drives.

I've asked him if his optical drive is IDE or SATA, we'll see if that makes a difference.

I've tried a couple of magazine cover DVDs with the following results:

1. Installing SuSe 10.1, I can get to the menu offering Installation, Live CD, Memory Test, etc. but both the Live CD and Installation ends up with the error message: "Unable to mount the CD-ROM."

2. Installing from another magazine cover CD that I used successfully to install Ubuntu on an older (by nine months) machine; it also hangs after "Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel."

I'm considering a few other options including installing an IDE hard drive to see if that brings any joy.

Interesting. This machine (hp laptop) and my desktop are both SATA drives with ide cdrw and dvd/rw drives. I ran into same issue as you did with several of the other distros. Even straight debain would bail out with "can not mount CDROM" after it had booted from it! Drives me crazy.

I had very good luck with Mepis--it just worked. However, I don't like the mepis support, that's why I came into the kubuntu fold.

I just wonder if you can try some boot options. at startup of the live cd, read through that list and try shutting off acpi or whatever it is. There are some others too. Hopefully, one of those options will get you through the install cycle, and from there, it should work fine.
