    Dell precision 390 Broadcom 57xx 167a

I'm having a problem with a new install of Kubuntu Dapper 6.06. My network card in my Dell precision 390 (Broadcom netxtreme 5754) is not loaded properly. The system info says:
    unknown device 167a

    I read here
    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...highlight=167a
that I need to download and compile the driver but I can't seem to install the necessary packages to compile. I installed make but it gives me errors when I try to compile. I'll have to reboot my comptuer and get the exact errors later.

I've also read this http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=186.0 but again not much help.

Strangely, many say that this device should just work but I've tried the live DVD, live CD and installed from the DVD with no luck.
    Any help would be appreciated.

If you really wish to compile the driver you will definitely need the package build-essential, you will probably need the linux-headers package for your kernel, Personally, I'd cough up the $9.95 US it costs to get a 10/100 NIC that works with Linux. And I'd remember this when I bought my next computer.

      Al,

Thanks for the reply. I actually got this fixed last night. I bought a usb nic, apt-get make gcc linux-headers-`uname -r` and was able to complie the tg3 driver.
