Re: Unable to Network connect Internet

      Hi

I managed to check the /var/log  files and am posting something which i suspect is the real cause as the system is reading the MAC address as invalid

The correct address as on the sticker on the mobo shows as 0015f2d38aa7 and thats what is showing in /etc/iftab file.

What could be error -5? How to make the eth0 see the correct mac address?

        So I guess it's a bug...
Maybe you should check with the kernel developers if they already know about this... If not, you should feel in a bug report.

        Good luck

Maybe there's another idea, you can try to download the latest kernel and compile it..
You should be able to find few howto on kubuntu or ubuntu wiki.

            Good luck

Oooh, bad idea. bad bad bad. This is kubuntu and asking a nubie to do something like that is like asking your mother to build a rocket ship so you can have satellite tv.

I think you are right however, it does seem like a bug and should be reported. I don't know how hard it is to submit one though. I suspect I will sooner or later though.

              wishing you well.

You're right, I've again forgot that you were a newbie... Anyway if you want to learn and you're not afraid to loose your install, so you can go on

                Cheers

Re: Unable to Network connect Internet

                  Hi

I am afraid it is not the kernel problem as I tried the live cd of Ubuntu, then Mepis and Suse , They are all showing the same problem. Before that all these Live Cds were able to detect my Ethernet card ands I was able to connect the network and my cable operators server and log on to the Internet.

I feel that there is a problem with my Motherboard and it is not reflecting the correct MAC address. I wrote to ASUS technicians and they told me it is easy to change the Mac address in Xp which I managed to do . The problem is that I can not change the MAC address in Linux.

There is program for linux as Macchanger 1.5.0 tar , I managed to down load , it needs to be compiled , which i tried to do but got an error as it says there is no C compiler. I am stuck , I will be grateful for any help.

If I can manage to change the mac Address I feel that this error of invalid mac address will be solved. It is these small things like compile and make install which is creating a lot of problems. Where do I get this C compiler as I do not have a connection throug Linux , I am using XP to post .

Re: Unable to Network connect Internet

                    Greetings simbiwa:

You will need to use adept to install 'gnu make' 'gcc' 'binutils' and I think these will add a few other packages (like c headers) automatically. Still, this is an extrodinary move on your part.

I've had a nic that haunted me in the past. It worked very well--in fact it was ripping fast. used the via-rhine driver. Then it simply stopped working. I think I still have the card in a bucket in the garage. I just stopped working and no matter what I did, it wouldn't play nice with linux. I've also had one realtek card do this. I don't know if these cards can be "reset" or not. I don't have or use MS here, so I don't know if they would run under that OS or not.

                    Anyway, I hope this helps.

                      Hi a_hippie ,

Thanks for the info but will adept work with out the internet connection?

Is it possible to retrieve these from the install cd?

                      I mean "gnu make" "gcc"

My main problem is the connection to the Internet.

To compile from source, the easiest way to get what you need is to install the 'build-essential' meta-package which will install the common tools for compiling (you may also need various -dev packages depending on what you're trying to compile...but start with build-essential)

If you can't access the internet from kubuntu, one way to get the packages is to download the Alternate Install CD which you can add as a repository (the CD has build-essential packages, they are just not installed by default)

To add the CD as a repository, put the cd in the drive and run:
                            Code:
                            sudo apt-cdrom add
(which will add the cd into your sources.list)
And then (with the CD still in the drive):
                            Code:
                            sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install build-essential

                              'build-essential'

I'm a dummy! Yeah, that package will add all the critical tools the system needs to build packages. I did my system the old fashioned way--try it until it works!

                              Thanks!

Re: Unable to Network connect Internet

just reading through this tread again, I wonder if bios might be the problem. I seem to recall there are some options that the bios is controlled by OS or something like that. I had one box that would give me problems, by resetting the value (either Y or N) seemed to make a difference. Anyway, you might want to explore your bios settings.

Man, it would really be neat if that solved your problem!

                                good luck
