USB to serial adapter Radio Shack

    Hello all:

I am using new laptop (HP Pavilion) that has no serial ports (com ports). I tried a PCMCIA to SERIAL hand-me-down adapter, but it never would work (and it kills M$ XP!). I just bought a new USB to SERIAL adapter from Radio Shack and I would like to report excellent results from this adapter. To use it, set your port to use /dev/ttyUSB0 . . took me a bit to learn that but now minicom can talk with my modems and TNC's. Further, I just set up kppp to use it, and finally got it working (you can google my other post about the kppp errors trying to make the ISP authenticate itself!). pppconfig works great (pon/poff/plog) first time, every time with this adapter and my external modem.

Just wanted to post this for others that might be looking for a serial add-on device.

    best regards.

        hi nixguy

All I had to do was edit the DEVICE section of the dialer. What dialer are you using?
