Can't dim screen on HP NC6000

I installed kubuntu 6.06 on my HP nc6000 laptop recently.  I have never been able to use the dim or brighten function on the laptop.  This makes it very hard to conserve power while on battery.  I used to have Mandriva 2006 on the laptop and the dim and brighten function worked perfectly.

Does anyone have an idea of how to restore the functionality?

No one has any idea about this?  Everyone else's laptop dimmer buttons work just fine?
