    best format for harddrive.....

    not sure if this is really a hardware question but.....
    what is the best format for a linux only harddrive?.....
    its just going to be a storage drive.....
    ist ext3 the way to go?.....

    This article http://www.debian-administration.org/articles/388 offers a comparison between ext3, reiser, xfs, jfs on a Debian install.  Short summary: XFS wins.

    I haven't tried XFS yet (too lazy to backup my storage drive ), but I plan to before the month is up.   I've only had one problem with ext3 in the five years I've been a Linux user, and that was when I had to format an 80 GB drive.  It was taking forever, so I killed the operation and formatted with reiserfs instead.  Reiserfs installed tout suite.  I've never had any trouble with reiserfs on any size of partition on a laptop or desktop ever.  So, IMHO, ext3 is OK on smaller partitions and reiserfs is OK on everything, but reading the article above will offer a broader perspective than mine alone.
